Hurricane Lures - Using Biomimicry to Influence Product Design
Founded by Peter Nord (known as Nordy), Hurricane Lures Australia sells specialty fishing lures and tackle ranging from novice to pro.
Driven by a deep love of lure fishing for bream in East Gippsland, Victoria, Nordy has been an avid angler for countless years. Every lure has been meticulously tested and fine-tuned for optimal performance.
Project Overview
After working with hone.pd for over six years, Hurricane Lures wanted to create unique fishing lures that flap and gyrate as they're pulled through the water. These lures needed to mimic and outperform real-life bait options to add variety to their market.
The product engineers at hone.pd used biomimicry to replicate shape and movement. According to product design engineer Andrew Jack, overlaid images of prawns and actual shellfish influenced the design. Prototyping the lures proved the most challenging in ensuring fine and accurate wall sections.
What is Biomimicry?
Biomimicry in product design draws inspiration from nature to create innovative and sustainable products. It involves studying and imitating natural systems, processes, and designs to solve human challenges and make more efficient and environmentally friendly products.
When applying biomimicry in the design process, product engineers observe and analyse how living organisms and ecosystems function and then apply those principles to their designs. This can involve mimicking nature's structures, patterns, or functions to create products.
